I have just downloaded the programme but it only appears to work occasionally. When I draw a gesture sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Could someone please tell me the secret.

Possible you are not drawing your gestures consistently? Turn on the "colored line" and watch yourself; or use Learn Gestures to see if your gestures are recognized as you think they are.

Another trick is to add a Utilities - Play Sound action to some gesture you aren't getting to work, and see if the gesture itself is successful or not.
